The 2018 Clarevale J.B. Barry Cabernet Malbec leads with lead pencil, oak, dried mint, cassis, bramble and black peppercorns. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and focused, with plenty of dried leaf detail, a profusion of red fruits, asphalt, dried roses and tapenade. It's a little meaty, as well. While there is a lot going on on the palate, the wine is lighter in alcohol than the other Jim Barry reds on the table here today, and at 13%, it is possessed of an impressive levity that extends beyond the tannin/fruit balance. The oak plays a substantial role in the wine at this stage, although the fruit does have the persistence to match up to it. A cellaring proposition here, one might suggest leaving this until 2028 to begin enjoying it, with the view to a long and bright future beyond that. The impressively endowed 2018 Clarevale has wide appeal thanks to radiant aromas of red currant and black currant with touches of cedar and earth that are shapely and well-composed. Five years of aging have seen it settle into a good place with rich layers of vibrant flavor, topped by violet complexity, interwoven with beautifully integrated fine-grained tannins.
